All AI Visibility Audit questions, by lever

Lever 1: Clarity

If someone arrived on your homepage having never heard of you, could they explain what you do in one sentence within ten seconds? Think about your opening headline and the first paragraph of body copy. AI reads this block first.

Do your page headings tell AI what each section covers, or do they read as brand language and metaphor? A clear heading example: "What marketing teams can do with our platform that they cannot do in a spreadsheet." AI cannot infer meaning from clever headings.

Lever 2: Positioning

Is your core positioning — who you serve, what you deliver, why you are different — stated identically on your website, LinkedIn, and any review or directory platforms? AI reads all your surfaces simultaneously. Inconsistency across platforms registers as unreliability.

Do you publish content that directly compares you to alternatives or named competitors? When someone asks AI "X vs Y", it cites the most credible voice in that conversation. That should be you, not a third-party review site.

Lever 3: Off-Site Presence

When you search for your category in ChatGPT or Perplexity, do you appear — and do you know which third-party sources AI is drawing from? 85% of AI brand mentions come from third-party sources — review platforms, editorial coverage, community forums — not your own website.

How active is your presence on third-party review platforms, industry publications, and community forums your target audience trusts? G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Reddit, industry press — wherever your category is discussed by people other than you.

Lever 4: Content Structure

Does every major page on your site open with a 2–3 sentence direct answer to the question that page is meant to address? AI reads in roughly 375-word chunks and lifts the paragraph that can stand alone. It does not read to the end to find your conclusion.

Do your key pages include FAQ sections written in the language of how buyers actually ask questions — including how they would type a query into an AI tool? FAQs are among the most-cited content formats in AI answers. Write them as buyer prompts, not corporate Q&As.

Lever 5: Buyer Intent

Is the majority of your content aimed at people who are browsing and learning, or at people who are comparing options and ready to decide? AI gets consulted right before someone chooses. Decision-stage content — comparisons, "is it worth it" guides, "how to choose" articles — is what earns citations at that moment.

Do you have content that names your specific ideal client — by role, company size, industry, or situation — and addresses their exact decision criteria? "Best [category] for [specific audience and use case]" is one of the highest-performing AI query formats. Generic content does not get cited at the decision moment.

Lever 6: Measurement

How regularly do you run your most important category queries through ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to monitor what AI says about your business? Monthly reconnaissance takes two to three hours and is the single highest-value activity available to any brand serious about AI visibility.

When you find inaccuracies in how AI describes your business, do you know how to trace the origin of that description and correct it at source? Asking AI to correct itself does not work. The inaccuracy lives in a third-party source — a directory listing, an outdated article, an inconsistent profile. You must fix the origin.

Marketing is a foundation,
not a launch.

Twelve honest questions across four pillars. A scored read on whether your current approach is compounding — or quietly draining the time and budget you could be spending elsewhere.

01

Clarity compounds

Every week your positioning stays vague, every channel built on top of it inherits that vagueness.

02

Consistency compounds

Businesses that execute consistently across channels see 53% stronger email results and 43% stronger paid social than single-channel effort (Taradel, 2025).

03

Outside eyes close blind spots

You can't audit what you can't see from inside your own business. That's not a skills gap — it's a vantage point problem.

Why this matters now

Some brands bring in expert help from day one and spend the following years compounding on a solid foundation. Others spend those same years rebuilding what should have been right the first time — the real cost isn't just the wasted spend, it's the time the business spent invisible while competitors weren't.

71% of small business owners now prefer DIY marketing tools over hiring help (Taradel, 2025) — yet 88% of businesses that increased marketing spend in 2025 saw measurable revenue improvement, and that gain only showed up when spend was paired with consistent execution (Taradel, 2025). The distance between those two numbers is where most small businesses lose ground.

All Consultant vs DIY Readiness questions, by pillar

Pillar 1: Brand & Positioning

If a new hire had to explain, in two sentences, why your last three customers chose you over the alternative — could they get it right without asking you first? Positioning drift is invisible from inside a business. It is usually the first gap an outside eye catches in week one.

When did your core messaging last change in response to evidence — a market shift, a competitor move, a pattern in lost deals — rather than a rebrand or a gut feeling? Positioning that has not moved in over a year is usually guesswork wearing the costume of strategy.

Could you say, in one sentence and without hedging, the single thing a customer would lose by switching to your closest competitor? If that takes more than a sentence internally, the market cannot answer it either — and unclear differentiation is one of the most expensive gaps to leave unaddressed.

Pillar 2: Content, SEO & AI Visibility

Do you work from a documented content plan tied to business goals, or does content happen when someone finds an hour? Ad hoc content is the single biggest predictor of wasted marketing hours in small teams — real effort, without the compounding return a system would give it.

Do you know which specific pages or posts are actually driving traffic, leads, or AI citations for your business — or are you publishing and hoping? Without this visibility, you cannot tell the difference between content that is working and content that is simply accumulating.

If a close competitor doubled their content output and search visibility tomorrow, would you know within a week — or find out from a lost customer? Competitive blind spots compound quietly. By the time they are visible without monitoring, the gap is already expensive to close.

Pillar 3: Paid Media & Demand Gen

Do you know your cost per lead and cost per customer broken down by channel — or just your total spend? Total spend tells you what marketing cost. Cost per channel tells you what marketing is worth. Most small businesses only ever answer the first question.

When a campaign underperforms, do you have a defined process for diagnosing why — or does it just get switched off? Turning off an underperforming campaign without diagnosis means you learn nothing, and are statistically likely to repeat the same mistake with the next one.

Is your paid budget allocated based on data about where your actual customers spend attention — or based on where competitors are, or where it was easiest to get started? Channel choice by convenience or copycat instinct is one of the most common — and most expensive — small business marketing habits.

Pillar 4: Marketing Ops & CRM

Can you see, in one place, every touchpoint a lead has had with your business before they buy? Without a single view of the customer journey, you are optimising individual channels while staying blind to what is actually converting.

If the one person on your team who understands marketing left tomorrow, would anything break? Key-person risk is one of the clearest signs that marketing is running on individual effort rather than an actual system — and it is invisible until the person is gone.

How often does data actually change a marketing decision — versus getting reported and filed away? Reporting without action is the most common way small businesses convince themselves they are "doing marketing properly" while nothing actually improves.
